Wine & Washington: Mapping the Senate via the Bottle

This is an adaptation from a talk I gave at a fundraiser in June 2026. Each comparison was followed by an entertaining table debate designed to get table mates engaging and discussing.

Today, we are going to look at the political map through a much more honest lens—the bottle. And no, before you get worried, this isn't one of those State of the Union drinking games where everyone takes a shot whenever a politician invents a word like misunderestimate. Remember when that was our biggest political problem? Simpler times.

No, this is a broader philosophical experiment. Because if you think about it, wine and politics require the exact same survival skills. To make it in Washington, just like making it onto a world-class wine list, you have to survive unpredictable climates, handle intense, constant pressure, and above all else, you have to develop incredibly thick skins.

Tonight, we’ve put together a lineup of six distinctive wines. But we aren't just tasting them for their terroir. We are mapping them to six fascinating senatorial personalities. We have paired every level of acidity, tannin, and structural grip to the actual legislative DNA of the people running this country.

Some of these pairings are going to make perfect sense. Some of them are going to completely upend what you think you know about a grape variety—or a politician. And yes, in the spirit of bipartisan fairness... there is one Republican in the lineup. You've been warned.

The Lineup: Flavor Profiles of the Senate

As we pour through tonight's flight, click on any Senator below to read our deep-dive analysis on why their legislative style perfectly matches the juice in the glass.

1. The Rust-Belt Sparkler

  • The Senator: John Fetterman (Pennsylvania)

  • The Pour: Bele Casel Asolo Prosecco Superiore Extra Brut DOCG

  • The Vibe: Unapologetically bone-dry, zero makeup, and surprisingly complex beneath a bubbly exterior.

  • Stay tuned for the post, next week!

2. The High-Acid Fighter

  • The Senator: Tammy Duckworth (Illinois)

  • The Pour: Haarmeyer Wine Cellars St. Rey 'SRV' Chenin Blanc

  • The Vibe: Resilient, deeply rooted in unexpected terroir (Sacramento Delta), with a laser-focused structure that refuses to bend under pressure.

3. The Beautiful Ramato

  • The Senator: Cory Booker (New Jersey)

  • The Pour: Valter Scarbolo ‘Il Ramato’ Pinot Grigio (Friuli Venezia Giulia)

  • The Vibe: A crowd-pleasing name, but skin-contact maceration gives it an intense, vibrant coppery hue and an energetic, textured personality you didn't see coming.

4. The Meticulous Planner

  • The Senator: Elizabeth Warren (Massachusetts)

  • The Pour: Margerum Wine Company 'Sybarite' Sauvignon Blanc (Central Coast)

  • The Vibe: (Note: Swapped Pinot for Margerum's actual acclaimed SB!) Taut, sharp, intensely focused, and possesses a highly specific, textbook-perfect structure. She has a plan for that, and this wine has a flavor profile for this.

5. The Maverick Blend

  • The Senator: Lisa Murkowski (Alaska)

  • The Pour: Domaine La Barroche ‘Liberty’ Rouge (Vin de France)

  • The Vibe: Our lone Republican. Declassified out of the rigid, traditional appellation system to do its own independent, rule-breaking thing.

6. The Interstellar Hero

  • The Senator: Mark Kelly (Arizona)

  • The Pour: Giornata 'French Camp Vineyard' Aglianico (Paso Robles)

  • The Vibe: Engineered to last. Massively structural, built for long-term endurance, and requiring a literal astronaut's patience to let it fully open up.
