Darth Vader — 2022 Felton Road Block 5 Pinot Noir

This is the boldest pairing of the lineup, and easily the most fun to argue.

The Felton Road Block 5 Pinot Noir is darkly compelling. It enters the room with immense authority, offering highly concentrated dark fruit, a powerful structure, and an enormous sense of gravitas. Like Darth Vader, it is imposing but never clumsy—the structural power here is disciplined, focused, and almost architectural.

But here is the key: Vader is not a villain completely devoid of complexity. Beneath the terrifying armor, there is something unmistakably noble. Similarly, Felton Road never allows raw power to morph into heavy-handed clumsiness. The tannins are iron-fisted but incredibly precise. This is darkness executed with total discipline, and it will effortlessly outlast almost everything else in the cellar.

Bannockburn, Central Otago is essentially the "Dark Side" of the Pinot Noir world. Situated at a dramatic 45 degrees south latitude, its extreme semi-continental landscape features deep deposits of ancient metamorphic schist gravels and heavy lakebed clay. It yields an intensity of fruit concentration that Burgundy rarely dares to replicate.

This extreme environment produces a Pinot Noir of dramatic contrasts: richness balanced by a piercing acidity, and intense ripeness paired with brooding tension. Vader embodies that exact same internal conflict—a menacing exterior fused with a buried, aching humanity.

Crucially, beneath the heavy armor of Block 5, there is still unmistakable Pinot Noir character. That matters. Even at its most commanding, the wine retains a haunting elegance and emotional depth. Vader is ultimately a tragic figure rather than a purely monstrous one; this bottling similarly balances sheer force with an underlying vulnerability and nuance.

It is the definitive "Iron Fist in a Velvet Glove"—commanding the palate with a deep, mineral-driven gravity and a savory intensity that is completely impossible to ignore.
